Mutations

Mutations are the result of a change in a gene or chromosome. Mutations usually are not beneficial and may be fatal.

Mutations are the source of new genes in a population. Sometimes mutations are beneficial to an organism. Natural selection will weed out harmful mutations and select for beneficial mutations.
