Bryophytes
Bryophytes include moss which is pictured to the left. Bryophytes are the most primitive plants. They differ from more advanced plants in lacking vascular tissues. Vascular tissues conduct water and nutrients throughout the plant. Bryophytes are limited in size by not having evolved vascular tissue.
Bryophytes have motile sperm that require water for the sperm to swim to an egg. Because of this, they are usually found in moist habitats such as stream banks and damp forests.

The sporophyte is shown on the left. It grows on the dominant gametophyte.

What is the purpose of the sporophyte in plants?
