ORIENTATION FOR COMPUTER KEYBOARDINGAOT 1113 Instructor: Jenean Jones, (405)682-1611, extension 7222 Computer Keyboarding is a class that is designed for beginners. Some students enroll in the class in order to brush up on their typing skills. However, the standards for the class are designed for beginners. It is important in Keyboarding to use proper posture, and keep your eyes off the keyboard. You will keep your eyes on the computer screen or your textbook while you are typing. The software will remind you about these important rules. You will begin with the numeric keypad, (lessons 14). Then, you will go to the alphabetic keyboarding, (lessons 113) and the numeric and skill keyboarding, (lessons 14--30 although you may stop after lesson 24 is completed). After lesson 24, you may go to the Skill Builders, (lessons AT). In my opinion, the most important lessons are lessons 113. These are the lessons that teach you the alphabetic keyboard. Spend extra time on these lessons. Send your lessons to me though WebCT email. Specific instructions are in the Software Instructions, which are on the home page for Computer Keyboarding under the Keyboarding Module icon. You need to retype each lesson from 34 times depending on your areas of weakness on the keyboard. You must complete the numeric keypad, lessons 14, the alphabetic keyboarding lessons 113, and numeric and skill keyboarding, lessons 1424 and email these lessons through WebCT. If any lesson is not received and approved as satisfactory by me, your overall grade will be reduced one letter grade. After lesson 24 is completed, the Microsoft Word portion of the class begins. You will do the assignments that are listed on the assignment sheet and email these assignments to me for approval. Sometimes an assignment may be returned for corrections. If assignments are returned to you for corrections, you will need to make the corrections, and email the corrected copy back to me in order to get credit for completing that assignment. All assignments on the assignment sheet must be turned in and satisfactorily completed. If any part of the lessons that are assigned are not received and approved as satisfactory by me, your overall grade will be reduced one letter grade. Three things make up your overall grade Theory Tests make up the first one-third of your grade. You will be given three theory tests. These tests are multiple-choice questions, the number ranging from 15 to 25 questions for each test. You will be given self-check questions to help prepare you for these tests. Production Tests make up the second one-third of your grade. On these tests you have to produce documents using Microsoft Word. On the first production test, you will have to type a horizontal and vertical centering problem, and a business letter. On the second production test, you will have to type a two-column table using tabs, and a one-page report. You will be given review production tests to help you prepare for the production tests. Five-minute timed writings make up the final one-third of your grade. On the 5-minute timed writings, you are allowed 7 errors. You must complete three satisfactory 5-minute timed writing tests. You may practice taking 5-minuted timed writings at home using the Keyboarding Pro software. All three kinds of tests, theory, production, and timed writings will be taken online. HOW TO START USING THE SOFTWAREKeyboarding Pro software needs to be installed on the computer you will be using for completing the course online. You should have bought a copy of the software when you bought your book at the bookstore. After it is installed, you will click the start menu, go to programs, then to Southwestern Keyboarding, and choose Keyboarding Pro. A screen will appear asking you if you are a new user or a guest. Sign on as a new user using your correctly spelled name. For class ID, use your social security number, and then pick out a password you will remember. This will store your lessons on the hard drive of your computer. Then, when you sign on again another time, it will take you back to where you left off. If you sign on as a guest, your lessons wont be stored on the hard drivealso, if you have a power surge, what you have done up to that time, will be lost. You must sign on as a new user on your computer. It is important to sign on as a new user if you are working in the lab or test center also. After you sign on you will see the Keyboarding Pro screen. It is divided into four sections. We will begin with the Numeric Keypad, which is the lower right portion of the screen. The numeric keypad has four lessons. You will begin with lesson 1. After you complete the Numeric Keypad, (lessons 14), you will go to the Alphabetic Keyboarding, (lessons 113), which is in the top left portion of the screen. After these 13 lessons are completed. You will go to the Numeric & Skill Keyboarding, which is in the upper right portion of the screen. This portion covers from lessons 14--30, but you are only assigned through Lesson 24. After completing Lesson 24, you may begin the Skill Builders (lessons AT), which is the bottom left portion of your screen. The Skill Builders do not have to be completed. The Skill Builders are there for extra practice. As a beginner, you will need to practice lessons 124 from 34 times each, maybe more.
