This course is designed for Administrative Office Technology and Accounting majors.  The student will develop ten-key by touch skills on the computer keyboard.  Students will format spreadsheets using effective design principles, enter common spreadsheet formulas and functions, sort data, and use graphic/chart features to solve accounting problems.

Office/Accounting Spreadsheet Applications introduces students to Excel software and uses formulas, functions, charts, and databases to solve business math and accounting problems.  This class also uses the 10-key pad on the computer in order to develop a skill at an efficient rate of speed.  Specific objectives for each lesson are listed at the beginning of each chapter in your textbook.

COURSE MATERIALS:   These are bought in the college bookstore.

Workbook:  Excel 2003, Comprehensive:  A Professional Approach, by Kathleen Stewart  (Glencoe)

             Keyboarding Pro, Version 4 software.

You will need a regular keyboard with a ten-key pad.

All the exams and timings which are a part of this class will be done online.  Students will not need to come to the school to complete the course.  It is important that you e-mail me frequently to let me know how you are progressing.  Please let me know if you are having problems with any of the assignments.  If I don’t hear from you, I think you are doing fine and don’t need my help.  This is the first time this class has been taught online, so there may be some bumps in the road.  I will do my best to make sure it doesn’t affect you or your grade in anyway.  This class is only eight weeks long, so it is very important that you follow the schedule in the syllabus on the homepage of this class.  Homework will not be accepted late unless there are in my opinion extenuating circumstances.

Keyboarding Pro software needs to be installed on the computer you will be using for completing the course online. You should have bought a copy of the software when you bought your book at the bookstore. After it is installed, you will click the start menu, go to programs, then to Southwestern Keyboarding, and choose Keyboarding Pro. A screen will appear asking you if you are a new user or a guest. Sign on as a new user using your correctly spelled name. For class ID, leave it blank, and then pick out a password you will remember.( Do not put my email address in this program. Bypass that page.) This will store your lessons on the hard drive of your computer. Then, when you sign on again another time, it will take you back to where you left off. If you sign on as a guest, your lessons won’t be stored on the hard drive—also, if you have a power surge, what you have done up to that time, will be lost. You must sign on as a new user on your computer. It is important to sign on as a new user if you are working in the lab or test center also.

After you sign on you will see the Keyboarding Pro screen. It is divided into four sections. You will go to the Numeric keypad section and do the four lessons. You will send the lessons to me using the following instructions. Because this is a spreadsheet class, we are only using the software for our 10-key drills and timings.

HOW DO YOU SEND YOUR HOMEWORK IN KEYBOARDING PRO TO ME?
In Keyboarding Pro, which is loaded on your individual computer you are using, there will be a student folder. Usually Keyboarding Pro is in the C Drive of your computer. To find it, you will click on the C Drive, then find

Program Files and click on Program Files. You should see Keyboarding Pro—click on it. After you select Keyboarding Pro, you should see a set of folders—one of them says “Students.” Click on the Student folder and then you should see your name. Every time you complete a lesson in Keyboarding Pro—if you have signed on as a new user the first time you sign on in the program—your work will be saved in that folder. As you complete lessons, it keeps adding them to your folder.

To send me a lesson or lessons in Keyboarding Pro:

3. Click on “Compose a message.”

8. When you are through typing your message, click on the “Browse” button in the lower right hand corner.

9. Find the C Drive, and click on it.

10. After you have brought up the C Drive, find Program Files.

11. In the Program Files, you should see Keyboarding Pro.

12. Choose Keyboarding Pro. Click Open

13. You should see a folder that says “Students.”

14. Click on the Students folder. Click Open.

15. You should see your name.

16. Click on your name. Click Open.

17. Then on the Compose Mail Dialog Box, choose “Attach file.”

18. Now click the “Send” button in the lower left hand corner.

19. Now, I should have your lessons.

HOW DO YOU SEND YOUR TEN-KEY TIMINGS IN KEYBOARDING PRO TO ME?

Before you send me your 10-key timings, you must read the instructions on the
homepage if you haven’t yet. For instructions on how to take a 10-key timing, go to the
homepage and read the instructions under 10-Key Timings. After you practice and learn
how to take them, you will send them to me as follows:
Click on file. Then choose, Save As. In the Save As dialog box, make sure to save it in
the Student Folder in Keyboarding Pro. Name the document, your name, one-minute 10-
key drill or three-minute 10-key drill (whichever one you have done. After you save it,
just send me your assignments like you have done in the past.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE EXCEL ASSIGNMENTS:

Begin at the beginning of the book and work through all of the pages of each chapter that is assigned. On the first page of the chapter, it tells you approximately how long each chapter will take to complete. After you have worked through all of the assignments within the chapter, you may do the assignments that are listed on the assignment sheet. The page numbers and the time when assignments are due are in the syllabus. Please refer to the syllabus for that information. When you e-mail an assignment to me through WebCT as an attachment, I will look at it and let you know if it is satisfactory or not. If there are errors that need to be corrected, I will email you back and let you know what is wrong with the assignment, so you may correct it. Then, you will e-mail it back to me. Each correct assignment is worth two points.

The most important thing to remember when taking an online course is to e-mail me with any questions you might have.

My office hours for this class will be completed in the AOT 2473 chat room beginning on June 7, 2006 at 8:00 PM. During this time, we will determine if this is a good time for everyone or if a different time should be appointed.
