MATH 0033

BASIC MATHEMATICS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The student will perform basic computational skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percent and use those skills to solve applied problems.  The student will also solve measurement problems in both the English and the metric systems and introductory algebra problems using signed numbers and variables.

COURSE COMPETENCIES

On completion of this course, the student will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percent, solve applied problems and solve introductory algebra problems.

GRADING POLICY AND PROCEDURES

Basic Math is graded on a passing (S) or not passing (U) basis.  To earn a grade of S for the course, the student must earn a score of 80% or higher on at least one test for each of Modules 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; and 11; and the student must earn a score of 70% or higher on at least one test for each of Modules 7, 8, 9 and 10.  If a grade of S is not earned, a grade of U will be recorded.

Retesting in Basic Math is allowed according to the following policy.  A student may take a test over a particular module two times. If the student is not successful after the second test, he may test a third time with the instructor's written permission.  After three unsuccessful attempts, the student should confer with the instructor.

OTHER GRADE DESIGNATIONS

W - (Official Withdrawal) Students may officially withdraw from a course until the end of the twelfth week of a sixteen-week semester (or 3/4 of the duration of a shorter course).

I - (Incomplete) An I is not an automatic option and is given ONLY at a professor's discretion in situations of extreme extenuating circumstances.  When an extreme extenuating circumstance arises, it is the student's responsibility to notify the professor immediately.  If an I grade is used, the professor establishes a contract with the student to specify the work which must be completed and the date for completion.

An incomplete may be given at the end of the semester to Basic Math students who have completed the majority of the coursework.  In this case, an incomplete may be given at the professor’s discretion and if the following criteria are met:

             (1)  Student has successfully completed (i.e. passed tests on) at least 8 of the 10

            modules, and

            (2)  Student has attended at least 80% of the scheduled class meetings.

The Incomplete period extends through late registration for the next major enrollment period.

At the end of the contracted period the professor will replace the I with the appropriate grade:  S or U.

RENROLLMENT IN BASIC MATH

If a student does not complete Basic Math, he may reenroll in the course.  He will receive credit for all tests passed in the previous course and begin “where he left off”.  The student must reenroll in Basic Math the next semester in order to carry forward previous test scores.

 MATH LAB

Students seeking assistance outside the classroom are encouraged to go to the Math Lab.  The Math Lab is located in the CLC Building.  Students are encouraged to use the Math Lab for:

·        Studying,

·        Asking questions of tutors ,

·        Viewing videotapes (Many mathematics courses have videotapes referenced directly to the textbooks.),

·        Listening to audio-tapes,

·        Accessing tutorial and mathematics software,

·        Accessing the Internet,

·        Checking work with solutions manuals,

·        Studying printed materials available for many mathematics courses,

·        Working on homework assignments

The hours of operation are tentative and likely to change around holidays and between semesters.  Check with your instructor to confirm hours.

Oklahoma City Community College complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Students with disabilities who seek accommodations should make their request by:

·        Contacting the office of Services to Students with Disabilities, (405) 682-7520 (v/tty).  Additional information may be obtained from www.okccc.edu/disability

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

The College considers academic dishonesty a very serious offense.  Any form of academic dishonesty is subject to disciplinary action by the college.  See the student handbook or the college catalogue for details.

REQUIRED TEXT AND CODE

The items listed below are required for the course.  They are packaged together and may be purchased in the OKCCC Bookstore.

·        BASIC COLLEGE MATHEMATICS, Seventh Edition, by Lial, Salzman, Hestwood, ADDISON-WESLEY, 2006

·        MyMathLab access code

ADDITIONAL COURSE MATERIALS

The additional course materials are listed below.  These materials are available for use in the Math Lab.

CALCULATOR

A scientific calculator that does fractions is recommended but not required.  A calculator may be checked out in the Math Lab for use in class.

VIDEOTAPE/DVD VIDEO TUTOR

The videotape series is available on videotape or on CD-ROM and is correlated section-by-section to the textbook.  Selected odd-numbered exercises from the text are presented.  Students are encouraged to work along with the video presenters and are given opportunity to solve a problem on their own before the solution to the problem is given.  The videotapes and DVD’s may be checked out for home use from the Library or used in the Math Lab.

MyMathLab

MyMathLab can be used to view video lectures, animations, a multimedia textbook, online homework, pretests, and practice tests.  It is accessible from computers in classroom 1N1 and the Math Lab and may be downloaded on your home computer.  The access code for MyMathLab is packaged with your textbook.

SOLUTIONS MANUAL

The Student’s Solutions Manual contains detailed solutions to odd-numbered section exercises and to all margin, Relating Concepts, Summary, Chapter Review, Chapter Test, and Cumulative Review exercises.

STUDY SKILLS WORKBOOK

The activities in the workbook teach students how to use the textbook effectively, plan their homework, take notes, make mind maps and study cards, manage study time, review a chapter, prepare for and take tests and evaluate test results.  This workbook is available in the Math Lab and online through MyMathLab.

MATH TUTOR CENTER

Each new text comes with a registration number that provides the student with a subscription to the service which provides assistance with examples and exercises from the book.  White Board technology allows tutors and students to actually see problems being worked while they “talk” in real time over the Internet during tutoring sessions.  Tutoring help is provided via these methods:  toll-free phone, toll-free fax, e-mail, as well as over the Internet. (www.aw-bc.tutorcenter).

Students may access the Math Tutor Center from computers in the Math Lab or elsewhere.

INSTRUCTOR’S EDITION

The Instructor’s Edition has answers to all text exercises and is available in the Math Lab.

OTHER INFORMATION

PROCEDURE

Your instructor will provide a timeline for mini-lectures and small group discussions, reviews, and tests for the entire semester.  Your instructor will also provide one-on-one tutoring when needed.  You may work with the group according to the timeline or you may work ahead of the timeline.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Attendance:  Class attendance is mandatory.  (See Module 11)  Regular attendance  is crucial for success.  In addition to your presence, punctuality is essential.  It is crucial not only to show up on time, but also to be prepared by bringing all necessary materials.
