Global Education Competency
Knowing our larger connection to the world is an essential part of a complete college education. In this course we will include connections to other cultures in order to create a fuller world perspective through our studies.
Attendance Policy
Students must attend class. Reading is a skill that must be developed through consistent practice. Therefore, students need to be present during class sessions and remain for the entire class session. Students who do not attend class are unlikely to see an improvement in their reading level. Students may be asked to withdraw from the class if they miss more than two classes of a T/TH class, 3 classes of a MWF class, or 1 class of a once-a-week class. Three tardies or incidents of leaving early will count as one absence.
Bonus attendance: Students who do not miss more than 2 class periods will receive 25 bonus points.
Students will receive a grade of A,B,C, or F. The grading scale is as follows:
90-100 A *
80-89 B
70-79 C
Below 70 F
Students will be allowed to retest one time if their initial score is below 70% except on the root/prefix quizzes. (Students will not be allowed to retest if they miss or fail one of the six root/prefix quizzes.) For other tests or objectives, the instructor will designate a retesting date after each objective has been covered. Late tests or assignments will be dropped one letter grade. It is the student’s responsibility to be in class on the retesting date if he or she needs to retest. If a student misses a retest, he or she must meet with the instructor within one week to make up the test, or a zero will be recorded. Grades for each objective will then be averaged to determine the final grade for the course. In addition to the tests listed in the generic syllabus, there will be in class assignments that will total 100 points. Students must be present during the assignments to obtain the points.
* To receive an “A” in the course, the student must score 10th grade level or above on the Nelson-Denny Reading Test or score 71 or above on the Accuplacer Test (in addition to having an “A” average).
Students in the Learning Community section will have a grade from Reading Road Trip. This is not listed in the generic syllabus.
Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism) is a serious offense and can result in the student receiving a grade of “F” in the course.
Cell phones and computers must be turned off and put away during class !! I appreciate proper classroom etiquette.
