Testing and Grading

Grades from the five tests given in this course will be averaged. THERE WILL BE NO RETESTING.* Therefore, the retesting mentioned in the syllabus will not apply.

The five tests will be Chapter 1 Test, Prefix and Analogy Test, Root Test,Paragraph Organizational Patterns Test, and Black Boy Test. The grading scale will be as follows:

A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F Below 60

In additions to the five tests, students will have to meet the following criteria on the Nelson-Denny test to receive their final grade for the course.

A- 12.8 grade level or a growth of 2 grade levels higher than 12.8
B- 11.4 grade level or a growth of 2 grade levels higher that 11.4
C- 10.0 grade level or a growth of 2 grade levels higher than 10.0
D- Below 10.0

Other objectives listed in the syllabus must be completed to pass the course, but these assignments will be graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. Students must revise unsatisfactory work until it is satisfactory. Homework must be turned in to the instructor within one week after the day it is assigned. A student may be dropped from the roll if he falls too far behind.

Attendance Policy
Since students will be working to build reading skill, and since skill is developed only by frequent correct practice, ATTENDANCE IS CRITICAL. A student may be dropped from the roll (Administrative Withdrawal) if the student has missed so many classes that, in the judgment of the instructor, the student cannot achieve the objectives of the course, or if the student has missed every class during any consecutive fourteen (14) calendar day period.

* Before a test is given in class, students can arrange to take the test at a different time if they will not be able to attend class the day the test is given. If a student simply fails to take a test, he or she will receive a zero.

Option: Students will be allowed to drop one test grade if they have no more than three absences during the semester.
