Easter bunnyBy Courtney Barrie, Staff Writer

Easter falls on April 8 this year and chief on the minds of both the young and the young at heart is the excitement of chasing the Easter bunny and hunting through the underbrush for candy-filled eggs.

These have been some of the most beloved Easter traditions for many generations.

These traditions are in keeping with the Western way of tying pagan rituals in with what most consider a Christian holiday.

The word Easter is thought to come from the name of the pagan goddess of spring and fertility Eastre, who was often depicted as a hare, according to www.history.com.

Because the egg symbolizes life and fertility, it also became incorporated with the springtime celebrations.

Christians began to celebrate Easter after the biblical resurrection of Jesus Christ, tying the religious aspects of spiritual renewal in Christianity to pagan spring traditions.

This year many venues are available to celebrate the Easter fun.

On April 4, the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History will open its doors free of charge from 4 to 7 p.m.

Crafts, face painting and an egg hunt will be offered.
