New students being offered taste of OCCC during Opening Day

By Scott D'Amico, Staff Writer

Popcorn, cotton candy and faculty-guided tours are just a few things that will be offered to students between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., Jan. 20 as part of OCCC's spring semester's Opening Day, First-Year Experience and Student Life Coordinator Sara McElroy said.

She said tables will be set up by each division with information about what those divisions have to offer incoming students. Student Life also will have a table set up informing students about the various clubs and organizations on campus.

Arts and Humanities Dean Susan Vanschuyver said, although Opening Day is geared toward new students, it is something that can be beneficial for returning returning as well. She said students still wondering what to major in are welcome to come look at what each of the divisions has to offer.

Two family orientations will take place during Opening Day, McElroy said. The first, taking place at 1:30 p.m., will be in English while the second at 3 p.m. will be in Spanish.

OCCC President Paul Sechrist will be one of the speakers at the family orientations.

Along with allowing students an opportunity to see what the college has to offer, they also will be able to print out a schedule so they can be guided to their classes.

"The majority of them come just to get familiar with the campus," McElroy said.

She said last semester's Opening Day for was a success.

"Last semester we had 1,000 students, easy," McElroy said.
