Athletes hit water, pavement in triathlong

Not even triple-digit temperatures could slow down the SuperSprint Triathletes on June 10.

Clint Bob and Jana Journeay destroyed the competition as they came in first in their respective categories. Clint Bob ran the triathlon in 1 hour and took first overall.

Jana Journeay took first in the women’s event with a time of 1 hour and 8 minutes, and took 19th overall in the event.

Three different events challenged the athletes and pushed their muscles to the limit. The SuperSprint Triathlon consisted the 500-meter swim, the 12-mile bike race and a 5-kilometer run.

The weather allowed for a drier race, as the weather was hot and dry at the start of the race unlike last year’s, which had showers in the morning.

Several of the athletes have run this race before and were up to the challenge for another year.

Russell Bainbridge was one of the returning athletes to compete in the men’s age 24 to 29 bracket.

“[The race] went really well… Last year it was all rainy,” Bainbridge said.

Bainbridge said his favorite event was the swim. Bainbridge finished the event in the top 25. His total time was 1 hour and 9 minutes. He said he plans to make it to next year’s event

Another athlete familiar to the competition, Jimmy Hawley, made his fifth appearance and competed in the men’s 34- to 39-year-old bracket.

Angela Stewart, who competed in the women’s age 34 to 44 bracket, said she had a good time participating in her second SuperSprint Triathlon.

“I really enjoy all of [the events] but I really liked the bikes,” Stewart said.
Stewart finished in the top 10 and finished the event in 1 hour 16 minutes.

Athletes helped themselves to Gatorade and bagels after the race. Central State Massage Academy offered their massage services to the athletes.
