Retreat to motivate leaders
Students from Upward Bound programs across the state joined OCCC students at the Radisson Hotel Tulsa on March 10 and 11 for a leadership retreat.
Twenty Upward Bound programs brought students to Tulsa for the retreat, said Carmela Pyle, Upward Bound director.
OCCC’s program brought 23 students. A total of 250 students and staff members attended the retreat, Pyle said.
The leadership retreat’s theme was “In Search of Leaders.” The goal of the conference was to build leadership skills, she said.
The first day of the retreat included a motivational speech by Kendrick A. Davis, games and activities, and a talent show.
Four students from OCCC performed a traditional Hispanic dance, Pyle said.
On the second day, the students were divided into four groups so they could interact, make new friends and meet new people.
Motivational speaker Lindy Waters ended the retreat with a speech. It was meant to inspire and challenge students to find the leader within themselves.
Pyle said the motivational speakers come from the same background as the Upward Bound students.
The speakers wanted to show it is possible to become successful with an education, he said.
The retreat was the 29th annual Upward Bound retreat.
