Bells will be ringing in the college theater
Fourteen handbell musicians
from San Francisco
will perform both classical
and modern melodies.
Sonos Handbell Ensemble will host a free workshop at 7 p.m., April 3 and will perform at 7 p.m., April 4, in the OCCC theater.
The sounds of Sonos also include a drum set, Tonga drum with a flute, piccolo and spoons.
Their set list includes songs such as the “Overture to West Side Story,” “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
The Sonos Ensemble may change the way many people perceive hand bells, said Scott Tigert , Cultural Program and Community Development assistant.
“They (handbells) can be used to play very complex compositions with a wide range of techniques,” Tigert said.
He said the performance could give a new picture of what handbell music sounds like.
Tigert said students who come to the workshop will have a chance to get on stage and ring some bells.
“It is definitely hands-on and people will be playing and learning these techniques,” Tigert said.
The Sonos Handbell Ensemble has a collective experience of 100 years of handbell ringing, according to www.sonos.org. They have performed many times for major events including the 1993 World Ice Skating Championships.
The Sonos Handbell Ensemble is part of the Cultural Arts Series and will be the last concert for the spring session.
Tickets for the concert are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and senior citizens.
