International student Murod Mamatov reminds OCCC students to be grateful for the exceptional educational institution that is OCCC.

Momatov, also known as DJ, said he made the decision to start at a two-year college so he could get more individual attention.

“I believe it is much better to start in a community college because you can feel like you are a part of something,” Momatov said. “You can ask questions and it’s not so big that everyone is too busy for you.”

Mamatov, international business major, is from Uzbekistan, which is in central Asia, north of Afghanistan. In Uzbekistan, the education system differs greatly from the education system in the United States.

American students have more of an ability to take a grouping of course options in the United States as apposed to the narrow curriculum many nations offer.

“It is more up to the students to decide, and I think that is important,” Mamatov said.

He learned English language as well as two other languages while attending grade school in his native country.

Mamatov said he has learned many things as well as gotten to know a lot of great people, especially professors while attending OCCC.

“Professors not only give you academic knowledge but they also give you guidelines for life.”

Not only is Mamatov going to school full time, but he also works in Caron’s, the college’s cafeteria.

“I really enjoy working for this cafeteria and being a help to OCCC,” he said.

While trying to balance homework and his job, Mamatov enjoys working out with his friends on Saturdays, reading Steven King books, listening to music and making musical mixes, which is where his name DJ came about.

Mamatov was recently awarded with the Ralph and Gene Gamel Scholarship for $1,000.
