The Living Space of the House
The paragraphs in the body of the essay should contain topic sentences with the main idea and detail sentences with supporting material. Each paragraph should be a unit like a room in a house. The supporting or detail sentences in a paragraph should be facts, statistics, examples, quotes, transitions, and other sentences which support the topic sentence. They are the finishing touches which give style to the room like drywall, paint, wallpaper, and light fixtures.
Paragraphs often fit into certain organizational patterns such as description, process, narration, compare/contrast, illustration, division/classification, cause and effect, persuasion, and so on.
